Jean Harter Shutt, MSW, CSW-PIP
Licensed Clinical Social Worker – South Dakota
About Your Therapist
I am a Licensed Certified Social Worker–Private Independent Practitioner (CSW-PIP) with extensive experience supporting individuals, couples, families, and youth across a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and relational concerns. My work is rooted in the belief that people thrive when they are understood, empowered, and supported—and that every person’s story deserves respect, dignity, and compassion.
With more than two decades of professional experience, my career has included clinical counseling, school-based support services, child protection, supervision, community outreach, crisis intervention, and leadership roles within social service systems. These experiences have shaped a comprehensive, systems-informed understanding of human development, trauma, resilience, and the social factors that influence wellbeing.
Clinical Approach & Advanced Training
I provide therapy grounded in evidence-based, trauma-informed, and strength-oriented practices. My advanced training includes:
- Individual Psychotherapy
- Couples and Family Therapy
- Trauma-Focused Care (including trauma response, resilience-building, and recovery models)
- Sex-Therapy–Informed Practice
- Crisis Assessment, Safety Planning, and Suicide Prevention
I tailor treatment to the unique needs, culture, and goals of each client, integrating relational, cognitive-behavioral, developmental, and systemic approaches. My clinical style is warm, direct, collaborative, and nonjudgmental, allowing clients to explore challenges while building skills, insight, and confidence.
Professional Certifications
In addition to clinical practice, I am a certified trainer for several nationally recognized programs:
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) – Understanding the lifelong impact of early adversity
- Enough Abuse – Child abuse prevention and awareness
- PREPaRE – School-based safety, crisis planning, and emergency response
These programs reflect my commitment not only to individual healing, but also to strengthening communities through education, prevention, and organizational readiness.
Professional Vision
My passion lies in helping South Dakota’s youth, adults, and families build healthier relationships and brighter futures. I believe deeply in the power of connection and collaboration, and I strive to create therapeutic experiences that foster growth, healing, and long-term wellbeing.
I am committed to continued professional development, ethical practice, and leadership within the State of South Dakota. My goal is to contribute meaningfully to systems that uplift our communities and to provide comprehensive, high-quality mental health services to those I serve.
Personal Philosophy
I hold the belief that “we rise by lifting each other.” When we honor each other’s strengths, recognize our shared humanity, and work together toward positive change, we create the conditions for real and lasting transformation.
Thank you for considering me as a partner in your journey. I look forward to supporting you with compassion, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to your growth and wellbeing.
